The Art of Jerarde Gutierrez

My work is rooted in representational painting. Although my work is representational, I do not wish to disguise the fact that it is a painting; I want the viewer to be engaged with the surface qualities and brushwork in my work. My goal is to examine my subjects and then to paint, not only my visual observations, but also to evoke a connection to the subjects and a sense of time and place. This is why I gravitate towards painting En Plein Air as it allows for fluid brush strokes, contrasting textures and interplay of representational and abstraction to capture the essence of a place. Painting outdoors is as much a meditative and observational experience as it is technical skill. Above all I want the viewer to feel I approached my subjects, whether an inanimate object, landscape, or fellow human, with authenticity and sincerity.

The Art of Sean Levon Nash

My work is chiefly concerned with memory, narrative, and color. The collage and multimedia work I produce includes western texts and photographs for both aesthetic value and as content- people trust newsprint.  My northwest coastal designs reflect the tradition of their own aesthetic sensibility and conform to a standard; the formal structure of Northwest coast art integrates spiritual and metaphysical ideas about the inseparability of one animal from another, or man from the context of his specific environment. These ideas reinforce the social necessity of cooperation and coordination. One image can coexist within another image without losing its integrity, or endangering its identity. This philosophical viewpoint is especially attractive to those of us representing multiple cultural influences.
