Spirits of the Living World | Paintings by Joaquin Alejandro Newman, 2026
Born from the colors of my seven-story mural, A New Day, at Nelly Hannon Gateway, The Descendants is a series of paintings exploring the spirits, animals, and ancestral presences that inhabit the world around us.
Created using the very paints that brought the mural to life, these works are an extension of its stories and visual language. Raptors, butterflies, water, and human figures emerge as relatives and messengers, moving between the physical and spiritual worlds. They reflect our deep connections to nature, the wisdom of those who came before us, and the living forces that surround us.
When people stand before the towering mural, I hope they sense the presence of these beings, even when they cannot see them. The Descendants gives them a more intimate form, inviting us to recognize the spirits that share our world and the relationships that connect all living things.
